Skin Cancer in Dogs

It's a sad fact that skin cancer in dogs, and cancer in general is increasing among our canine friends.

Skin cancer in dogs covers a broad category of tumors and includes any uncontrolled growth of cells of the skin or associated structures such as glands, hair follicles and supporting tissues such as fat and connective tissue.

Skin cancer in dogs is the most common form of cancer in dogs and more common than bone cancer in dogs. Although skin cancer in dogs is most common in dogs from 6 to 14 years there are forms of skin cancer in dogs that affect younger dogs.

The highest incidence of skin cancer in dogs is found in boxers, Scottish terriers, bull mastiffs, Basset hounds, Weimaraners, Kerry blue terriers and Norwegian elkhounds, but no dog is immune.

One of the problems with skin cancer in dogs is that no one knows what causes it. Some think exposure to the sun may be a factor as well as genetics. Light haired dogs that have thin coats and that stay out in a lot of sun may be prone dog skin cancer.

Skin cancers can be divided into four categories, depending upon which cell type is involved. The categories are epithelial tumors, mesenchymal tumors, round cell tumors and melanomas.

In dogs, the most common dog tumors are lipomas, mast cell tumors, sebaceous gland adenomas/hyperplasia and papillomas.

Most skin cancers appear either as a sore that does not heal or a swelling in or beneath the skin. Sometimes the skin can be red or flaky.

There are a number of tests for detecting dog cancer and dog tumours some of which are invasive, but two, urine analysis and x rays are not.

Treatments are either by surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy or a new teatment where a dye is injected into the blood and a lser is used to kill the cancer cells.

Of course during all of this your dog needs a lot of tender loving care.

Naturally you should do all you can to prevent skin cancer in dogs affecting your canine friend
